‘John Wick’ Star Keanu Reeves Was Almost In the ‘Fast and Furious’ Franchise… Twice…
Warning: This story contains spoilers from Fast X
After more than 20 years, the Fast & Furious saga has basically become a superhero franchise, so it's only appropriate that two on-screen superheroes have joined "the family" in Fast X. But what are the chances that both those actors played the same superhero in the past?!
Alan Ritchson stars in Fast X as Aimes, the new head of the Agency who's actually a double agent plotting against Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel). The final scenes reveal he's been working off screen with villain Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) since the end of Fast Five.
It's a twist we should have seen coming from a mile away since Ritchson and Momoa have a shared history of playing DC Comics hero Aquaman. (Ritchson played him on Smallville from 2005-2010, years before Momoa first took on the role in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.) Of course the two Aquamen would be in cahoots.
Keanu Reeves has been a part of so many successful movies over the years, the latest being John Wick 4, but by the sounds of it he just missed out on joining a new blockbuster. Interestingly, this is the second time he was in talks to join the world.
According to longtime Fast writer Chris Morgan, the legendary 58-year-old John Wick star had previously been in talks to join the saga in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, playing the villain behind the voice in charge of the Eteon organization. And now Fast X star Alan Ritchson reveals that Reeves was also in talks to play the villain in the latest installment as well.
When speaking to EW, Ritchson explains that he wasn't actually the first person in mind to play Aimes, the new head of The Agency who betrays Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) by working with sociopath Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa).
"It was just a little stroke of luck and good timing," he says. "I was working on a movie with Hilary Swank up in Winnipeg in the freezing cold, and I got a call that things had shifted in the plans with Keanu Reeves, which is I think who was originally intended to play my part. Tough act to follow."
What role was Keanu supposed to play in Hobbs & Shaw? The outlet noted he was considered for an offscreen cameo voicing the Eteon Director. Ryan Reynolds ultimately took the part.
Fast X is shaping up to be a serious blockbuster based on box office numbers from its opening weekend.
Of course, Keanu isn’t hurting even though he missed out on Fast X. His mega-successful John Wick franchise just hit a major milestone.
